The cause might be a dirty throttle body and/or air flow metering device.
In electronically fuel-injected cars, the throttle body is a cylinder-likeunitcontaining a butterfly valve which rotates to control the volume of air goinginto the engine. This is connected to a throttle position sensor and air-flow sensor which communicate with the car's computer, so it can deliver the necessary amount of fuel to the injectors.
The air flow meter and throttle body work together to measure and control the amount of air the engine takes in, and when it gets dirty, the engine can't idle smoothly.
